Late Fall Bass FISHING IN MINNESOTA: ONE OF THE BEST TIMES TO CATCH TROPHY SMALLMOUTH AND LARGEMOUTH BASS

When most people think about fishing in Minnesota, they picture warm summer days on the water. But some of the best bass fishing opportunities happen when temperatures start dropping and fall transitions toward winter.

Late September, October, and even November can offer incredible opportunities to target big smallmouth and largemouth bass throughout Minnesota, especially on Lake Mille Lacs, Lake Minnetonka, and other lakes around the Twin Cities.

As a professional bass angler competing on the MLF Pro Circuit and Toyota Series, I’ve spent countless hours learning how bass behave in different conditions. One thing I’ve learned is that late fall can be one of the most rewarding times of the year to get on the water.

Why Late Fall Is One of the Best Times to Catch Big Bass

As Minnesota’s water temperatures begin dropping, bass change their feeding patterns and start transitioning toward their winter locations.

During this period, smallmouth and largemouth bass often feed heavily on baitfish, creating opportunities to catch some of the biggest fish of the season.

There are several reasons I enjoy fishing this time of year:

● Bass can become concentrated around key structures and baitfish.

● Larger fish may feed aggressively during favorable conditions.

● Fishing pressure decreases significantly compared with summer.

● Anglers have opportunities to target trophy-size fish.

Late fall fishing isn’t always easy, but understanding where fish move and how they feed can make a huge difference.

Lake Mille Lacs: Trophy Smallmouth Bass Fishing

Lake Mille Lacs is one of Minnesota’s premier destinations for trophy smallmouth bass fishing.

Known for its rocky structure, expansive reefs, and incredible smallmouth population, Mille Lacs offers anglers the opportunity to target quality fish throughout the fall.

As water temperatures cool, smallmouth bass often begin transitioning toward deeper rock structures, points, and areas where baitfish are present.

Finding the right combination of structure, bait, and water temperature can be the key to unlocking an incredible day on the water.

For anglers looking to experience trophy smallmouth bass fishing in Minnesota, late fall on Mille Lacs is a time of year I highly recommend.

Lake Minnetonka: Late Fall Largemouth Bass Fishing

Located just west of Minneapolis, Lake Minnetonka offers some excellent late-season largemouth bass fishing opportunities.

While many anglers associate Minnetonka with summertime weed fishing, fall presents a completely different opportunity.

As vegetation begins to die back and water temperatures drop, largemouth bass often reposition around remaining healthy vegetation, deeper weed edges, hard-bottom areas, and nearby structure.

This can make late fall an excellent time to locate quality largemouth bass.

Lake Minnetonka is also a great option for anglers in the Minneapolis–St. Paul area who want to experience bass fishing without traveling far from the Twin Cities.

My Approach to Late Fall Bass Fishing

One of the biggest mistakes anglers make during the fall is fishing the same areas and techniques they used throughout the summer.

Bass are constantly adjusting to changing water temperatures, weather patterns, and baitfish movements.

When I’m fishing in late fall, I pay close attention to water temperature, baitfish activity, structure, and how the fish are positioning throughout the day.

Some of my favorite techniques include jerkbaits, swimbaits, football jigs, and finesse presentations.

The key is staying flexible and adjusting to what the fish are telling you.
